This is my wife's story. And I think about it every single day.
She was 20, in college, when her father went for a routine checkup and got the all clear. He was 54 years old, healthy, with no known conditions and no major warning signs.
One week later, he went to work, collapsed on the shop floor, and was gone within four hours. It was a cerebral aneurysm. No warning. No goodbye.
No warning. No goodbye. And no life insurance.
Her mother was a travel agent and had some income, but not enough to replace what had been lost. There were three children. Two were in college and one was still in high school. There were no family members or friends who could step in financially.
And there was no life insurance.
Overnight, a comfortable middle class family was left wondering how the bills would get paid.
Thirty years later, her mother still has not financially recovered to the position she was in before that day.
We have twins of our own now. They are 21, the same age my wife was when her world fell apart. When I look at them, I think about the pain of losing someone without warning. I think about the difficult conversations about money in the middle of grief. I think about the weight of not knowing how a family will get through.
We would never want that for our children. We would never want that for anyone.
Thinking it will never happen to me is not a plan. It is a blind spot.
